BackBox is an Ubuntu based Linux distribution penetration tests and security assessments oriented providing a networks and informatic systems analysis toolkit. BackBox desktop environment include a minimal yet complete set of tools required for ethical hacking and security testing.

BackBox main aim is providing an alternative, highly customizable and performing system, Backbox uses the light window manager XFCE.
It includes some of the most used security and analysis Linux tools, aiming to a wide spread of goals, ranging from web application analysis to network analysis, from stress tests to sniffing, including also vulnerability assessment, computer forensic analysis and exploitation.
The power of this distribution is given by its Launchpad repository core constantly updated to the last stable version of the most known and used ethical hacking tools. The integration and development of new tools inside the distribution follows the commencement of Open Source Community and particularly the Debian Free Software Guide Lines criteria.

BackBox Linux project was born in Italy in 2010. The distribution, created by Raffaele Forte University of Calabria Computer engineering student and security enthusiast, was published in the same year on September.
The Open Soluzioni, web community born to stimulate Open Source tools diffusion and adoption, promotes and follows the project development. Actually the project is ongoing and is supported by the international Free Software community.
